Children’s Exposure to Violence

Children’s Exposure to Violence

In a major study conducted by the US Department of Justice in 2008, more than 60% of the children surveyed had been exposed to violence in the previous year, either directly or indirectly (for more results from the survey, see this report: http://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles1/ojjdp/227744.pdf). The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has launched an initiative to address this issue through “The Attorney General’s Children Exposed to Violence Demonstration Program: Phase I.” (http://www.ojp.gov/newsroom/pressreleases/2010/OJP10058.htm)

Children’s exposure to violence takes many forms: a child may be a victim of violence or a witness to violence; violence may consist of abuse, neglect, maltreatment, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, school violence, and community violence. OAG is looking to community groups to design outcome-based programs to end children’s exposure to violence. Participants will develop a comprehensive approach across the continuum of prevention, intervention, treatment, and response, including services, policies, training, evaluation, and public awareness.
