Nonmedical Use of Drugs in Children and Adolescents: USPSTF Research

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has posted its draft Research Plan on interventions to reduce the nonmedical use of drugs in children and adolescents. It is available for review and public comment through February 11, 2013.

Primary Care Interventions to Prevent Child Maltreatment: USPSTF Draft

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has posted its draft recommendation statement on primary care interventions to prevent child maltreatment. It is available for review and public comment through February 18, 2013. The evidence report on which this draft recommendation is based was also published in Annals of Internal Medicine.

New R01 and R18 Due Date with Temporary Budget Increase

AHRQ announces a new application due date for two AHRQ standing Funding Opportunity Announcements:
  • AHRQ Health Services Research Projects (R01)
  • AHRQ Health Services Research Demonstration and Dissemination (R18)
AHRQ will accept applications for a new receipt date of March 28, 2013 for a budget up to $500,000 in total annual costs.

AHRQ Intent: Funding Opportunities for Patient-Centered Outcomes

AHRQ intends to promote several new initiatives by publishing Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) to solicit applications for research on Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR), beginning early spring 2013.  This Notice of Intent to Publish several Requests for Applications is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful collaborations and responsive projects.

Newborn Intensive Care Units See Sharp Drop in Bloodstream Infections

Central line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) in newborns were reduced by 58 percent in less than a year in hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) participating in an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality patient safety program.

Substantial Variation Exists in Hospital Readmission Rate for Children

Research on pediatric hospital readmissions, supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and Centers for  Medicare & Medicaid Services CHIPRA Pediatric Quality Measure Program, appeared in the January 23/30 issue of JAMA.

New HCUP Tutorial for Researchers on Data and Tools

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) has developed a series of free, interactive courses to provide HCUP data users with information about HCUP data and tools, and training on technical methods for conducting research with HCUP data. The on-line courses are modular, so you can either move through an entire course, or access sections that interest you the most.

Latest Nationwide Emergency Department Data Available from HCUP

The Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS) is a unique and powerful database that yields national estimates of emergency department (ED) visits. The 2010 NEDS contains data from nearly 29 million ED visits and encompasses all encounter data from more than 960 hospital-based EDs in 28 states.  The NEDS provides information on "treat-and-release" ED visits, as well as ED visits in which the patient was admitted to the same hospital for further care.
