Charles River Introduces First Online Data Management System

By Mia Burns (mia.burns@ubm.com)
Contract research organization Charles River Laboratories has unveiled its new Laboratory Testing Management system. The LTM system centralizes animal health surveillance, biomarker, and genetic testing programs into one virtual location giving client's real-time, mobile access to colony quality control information. According to company executives, mouse models are an essential component of all drug development, but for a mouse model to accurately predict whether a drug will be effective and safe, the model must remain free of confounding pathogens. One mouse with an opportunistic infection could quickly compromise an entire colony and, ultimately, a study, potentially costing its sponsor millions of dollars in lost time and resources. Charles River’s LTM allows colony managers to take immediate action to preserve the health of their colony and the integrity of a study. Associate Web Editor Mia Burns interviewed Lisa White, Ph.D., M.B.A., General Manager, Research Animal Diagnostic Services, Charles River Laboratories about LTM and the impact that the system could have on the future of animal diagnostics.
Q: How will the LTM system function?
A: Charles River’s Research Animal Diagnostic Laboratory online data management platform, Laboratory Testing Management (LTM), centralizes health surveillance, biomarker and genetic testing programs in one virtual location. The ease of use, smart data summarization, and on-the-go results provide a powerful portal to help researchers manage their data, and in turn, their dynamic facilities.  LTM allows researchers to easily duplicate orders for repeat testing, receive instant alerts to replace weekly status calls, and track and trend historical data minus the manual entry.
Q: How do you anticipate LTM to impact the future of animal diagnostics?
A: In our industry, there is great demand for new and better diagnostics technology. With LTM, we are providing faster, more comprehensive ways of delivering customers up-to-the-minute animal diagnostics data.  Charles River’s online data management platform, LTM, sets a new standard in animal health diagnostics efficiencies, allowing customers to receive data critical to managing the health of their colony wherever they are. LTM will also be translated into local languages, helping global clients interface with the system more easily.
Q: When you refer to LTM as the first online data management system, do you mean within the animal surveillance world?
A: Yes, LTM is the first online data management system to centralize animal health surveillance, biomarker testing, and genetic testing programs into one virtual location with real-time, mobile access to colony quality control information.
Q: In what ways do you think that LTM will help out researchers?
A: LTM facilitates the generation and review of health surveillance data so researchers have the data they need to make critical decisions regarding their colonies.  From scheduling an online submission to trending multi-colony health report data, LTM allows researchers to keep a pulse on their colony animals. Text alerts and the new mobile app provide real-time communication for first time positive findings. Quick access to current and historic data, anywhere, anytime provides people with the flexibility to manage their programs even when they are away from their computer.
Q: What are some features of LTM that you think make this system unique?
A: Once an order has been placed, LTM keeps you up-to-date on the status of your request, including when a shipment has been received and when results are ready to be reviewed. The browser-based homepage dashboard and convenient mobile application provide a snapshot of future, current and past orders, a tally of recent alerts and one-click access to common requests. LTM will automatically send you an alert upon a first-time positive finding, and you can customize your preferences to be contacted via email, text message or mobile app notification when other status updates have been made.
With user maintenance rights given to an account administrator at setup, new users can easily be added at any time, keeping all study researchers up to speed on a program’s progress. With 24/7 access and multilingual capabilities (English, German, French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish), LTM is an ideal solution for global teams.
Q: Does Charles River Labs plan to launch any additional animal diagnostics products?
A: Yes, as a full-service provider of quality control testing for laboratory animal species, we are also launching Zebra fish diagnostics to meet the needs of researchers utilizing these important models.  Also, we are launching a new EZ-Spot service, a dry whole blood spot sample collection method that offers a more streamlined alternative to submitting mouse or rat serum for serology testing.
