American Board of Medical Specialties To Offer Credits to Physicians Participating in AHRQ EvidenceNOW Initiative
The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) has announced that it will provide an extra incentive for physicians participating in AHRQ’s EvidenceNOW: Advancing Heart Health in Primary Careinitiative. ABMS issued a press release on October 5 noting that physicians who are board certified by one of 20 of the 24 ABMS member boards may now receive maintenance of certification credit for participating in EvidenceNOW. The goal of EvidenceNOW is to help clinicians in small primary care practices systematically implement the latest evidence to help prevent heart attacks and stroke. Through seven regional cooperatives, EvidenceNOW will provide quality improvement services for approximately 1,750 practices with more than 5,000 primary care professionals serving approximately 8 million people.
EvidenceNOW: Advancing Heart Health in Primary Care
This AHRQ grant initiative to transform health care delivery will build critical infrastructure to help smaller primary care practices, which often do not have internal resources for quality improvement, apply the latest medical research in the care they provide. Aligned with broad U.S. Department of Health and Human Services efforts for Better Care, Smarter Spending and Healthier People and Million Hearts®, this initiative will focus on helping thousands of primary care practices use the latest evidence to improve the heart health of millions of Americans.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. To prevent heart attacks, health care professionals can work with their patients to adopt the ABCS of cardiovascular disease prevention: Aspirin use by high risk individuals, Blood pressure control, Cholesterol management, and Smoking cessation. New evidence continually surfaces about how best to deliver the ABCS. The goal of EvidenceNOW is to ensure that primary care practices have the latest evidence and that they use it to help their patients live healthier and longer lives.
EvidenceNOW establishes seven regional cooperatives composed of public and private health partnerships and multidisciplinary teams of experts. Each cooperative is recruiting and engaging 250-300 small- and medium-sized, independent primary care practices and providing quality improvement services typically not available to the practices because of their size. The services include onsite practice facilitation and coaching, expert consultation, shared learning collaboratives, and electronic health record support.
The cooperatives span 12 States that deliver health care in a range of metropolitan and rural settings and serve diverse populations. EvidenceNOW will reach Native Americans in Oklahoma, Hispanics in New Mexico and Colorado, medically underserved communities in New York City and the Chicago Tri-State region, and rural communities in the Pacific Northwest, Virginia, and North Carolina. EvidenceNOW will ultimately reach over 5,000 primary care professionals serving approximately 8 million people.

Each cooperative will conduct an internal evaluation. AHRQ also has awarded a grant to the Oregon Health Sciences University to conduct an independent national evaluation ( PDF version - 2.31 MB ) of the overall EvidenceNOWinitiative. The team will study the impact of the EvidenceNOW interventions on practice improvement and the delivery of cardiovascular care. In addition, the external evaluation team will study which practice supports and quality improvement strategies are most effective in improving the implementation of new evidence.

Funding for this initiative comes from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Trust Fund, which was created by the Affordable Care Act, and supports AHRQ’s mandate to disseminate and implement patient-centered outcomes research findings so that new findings are integrated into the delivery of health care.
