Webinar: Safety Assurance Factors for EHR Resilience Guides (SAFER)

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology invites you to participate in an upcoming webinar on January 30, 2014 at 3:00pm—4:30pm EST related to health IT and patient safety. This webinar will cover the Safety Assurance Factors for EHR Resilience (SAFER) Guides. The presenters include Joan Ash, Hardeep Singh, and Dean Sittig — the health IT safety researchers and informatics experts who led the SAFER Guides development.

Register today!

The SAFER Guides are designed to help healthcare organizations conduct self-assessments to optimize the safety and safe use of electronic health records (EHRs) in the following areas:
  • High Priority Practices
  • Organizational Responsibilities
  • Contingency Planning
  • System Configuration
  • System Interfaces
  • Patient Identification
  • Computerized Provider Order Entry with Decision Support
  • Test Results Reporting and Follow-Up
  • Clinician Communication
The SAFER Guides are based on the best evidence available at this time. Each Guide provides a Checklist for users to assess their organization's level of implementation. The Guides also include Worksheets which provides the rationale and examples of how to implement each recommended practice. Meaningful Use and/or HIPAA Security Rule requirements are identified in connection with recommended practices

The recommended practices in the SAFER Guides are intended to be useful for all EHR users, developers, patient safety organizations, and others who are concerned with optimizing the safe use of health IT. We strongly encourage individuals who use, design, and implement EHRs to register.
