Target Audience

The target audience for this learning activity includes all primary care physicians (PCPs), including family medicine physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, OB-GYNs, internists, nurses, pharmacists, case managers, health educators, and other allied health professionals.

Overall Learning Purpose/Goal

The goal of the video is to present information to a variety of healthcare professionals about available evidence for the benefits and harms of interventions that support and improve medication adherence. The video will also convey information about the applicability and limitations of the evidence as well as suggestions for applying the findings to clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Identify factors that influence medication adherence.
  2. Describe the adverse consequences of medication nonadherence.
  3. Summarize the effectiveness of interventions on medication adherence and on health outcomes.
  4. Apply this information to interventions on medication adherence with your patients.
  5. Provide accurate and appropriate counsel as part of the treatment team. (for pharmacists)
  6. Provide appropriate care and counsel for patients and their families (for registered nurses)

Meera Viswanathan, PhD 
Director, RTI International-University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Evidence-based Practice Center
Dr. Viswanathan is a health services researcher focusing on systematic reviews. She directs the RTI International-University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Evidence-based Practice Center (RTI-UNC EPC). She has led systematic reviews on medication adherence and medication therapy management for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). She serves as co-investigator on a grant applying a novel analytic approach, Qualitative Comparative Analysis, to the analysis of medication adherence interventions (Dr. Leila Kahwati, PI); this approach seeks to understand the relative contributions of components of complex interventions to outcomes. In addition to leading or supporting numerous reviews, she has worked extensively on methods to refine and add rigor to systematic reviews. She has led or participated in the development of tools and guidance to assess the risk of bias of observational studies and systematic reviews. She has developed guidance on evaluating conflict of interest from nonfinancial sources and on conducting reviews of complex interventions.
