Using data from the Leapfrog Safety Grade database, this study explores the relationship between hospital characteristics (e.g., geographic location, size, and system affiliation) and performance ratings among 284 California hospitals. Findings suggest that urban hospitals, smaller hospitals, and hospitals not affiliated with a larger health system were more likely to have lower safety performance scores.
