Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, 2009
Recommendations of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force
AHRQ has released the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services 2009, which highlights recommendations from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. This year’s Guide provides updated Task Force recommendations on topics such as aspirin for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, major depressive disorder for children and adolescents, screening for prostate cancer, universal screening for hearing loss in newborns, and screening for colorectal cancer. The Guide contains evidence-based recommendations that have been adapted for a pocket-size book, making it easier for clinicians to consult the recommendations in their daily practice. Recommendations are presented in an indexed, easy-to-use format, with at-a-glance charts. To access The Guide to Clinical Preventive Services 2009, please visit: http://www.ahrq.gov/clinic/pocketgd.htm. A print copy of the Guide is available by sending an e-mail to ahrqpubs@ahrq.hhs.gov.
Task Force recommendations are also available on the electronic Preventive Services Selector (ePSS). The ePSS is an electronic tool, available on the web or downloadable to a PDA, which enables clinicians to search for Task Force recommendations based on a patient’s age, sex and risk factors. The ePSS can be accessed at www.epss.ahrq.gov.
As part of its ongoing work in prevention, AHRQ supports the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which is celebrating its 25th year of evaluating evidence on clinical preventive services and making recommendations for their effective use. The Task Force is the leading independent panel of experts in prevention and primary care. The Task Force conducts rigorous, impartial assessments of the scientific evidence for the effectiveness of a broad range of clinical preventive services, including screening, counseling, and preventive medications. Its recommendations are considered the gold standard for clinical preventive services.
Additional information about the evidence-based recommendations of the Task Force and AHRQ’s work to improve the delivery of effective clinical preventive services is available at: www.preventiveservices.ahrq.gov.

--------------
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is an independent panel of experts in primary care and prevention that systematically reviews the evidence of effectiveness and develops recommendations for clinical preventive services. Sponsored since 1998 by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Task Force is the leading independent panel of private-sector experts in prevention and primary care.
The pocket guide covers all USPSTF recommendations from 2002 through March 2009. Up-to-date recommendations are available through the A-Z Topic Index.
Recommendations are organized for quick reference and easy searching. One section matches recommended preventive services to patients—men, women, pregnant women, and children.
Print Copies: Single print copies of the pocket guide are available free from the AHRQ Publications Clearinghouse at: 1-800-358-9295 or AHRQPubs@ahrq.hhs.gov. Ask for The Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, 2009 (AHRQ Publication No. 09-IP006).
PDA Program: Another online option for accessing USPSTF recommendations is its PDA program, the Electronic Preventive Services Selector.
