This seven-page technical brief reports on the results of two recent studies that aimed to increase the understanding and capabilities with regard to decontamination of outdoor environments and challenging settings (heavily soiled surfaces and cold temperatures) following a biological incident. This 59-page report describes the impact that dirt and grime may have on the decontamination efficacy when using pH amended bleach or diluted bleach to inactivate bacillus anthracis surrogate spores. It also assesses the impact of (rain) water on the transport of spores and subsequent decontamination of track ballast, a porous support structure frequently encountered in subway and train tracks.
