The Food and Drug Administration is announcing through Federal Register Notice a Public Hearing on November 5th, 2018 providing the opportunity for public comment on the Future Format of the National Drug Code (NDC).
A change to NDC length and/or format will be necessary when FDA runs out of 5-digit labeler codes. The NDC is widely used in many aspects of healthcare data today and any change to its format or length will have an impact on the health IT systems for both government and industry sectors. FDA is seeking input from a variety of stakeholders through comments and responses to FDA questions published on the associated webpage.
