Non-fatal injuries rack up a high bill in the U.S.

A new analysis details the massive costs of non-fatal injuries in the U.S. each year. Here’s a look at the findings, which culled data from injuries treated in hospitals in 2013.
  • There were more than 31 million non-fatal injuries treated in hospitals, which cost $168 billion in hospital and home care, emergency transportation, drugs, and physical therapy.
  • The estimated cost was even greater — $223 billion — for future lost work due to permanent disability.
  • Falls and being hit by an object were by far the most common cause of injury, accounting for more than 12 million injuries. The average estimated cost, including medical care, lost work, and lost quality of life: $66,857 per injury.
