Think your genetic identity is secure? Maybe not
Your genetic privacy may have eroded even further than previously realized, according to two new studies. The same technique that put alleged killers behind bars can also turn up family relationships via consumer genealogy websites. The two studies — in Science and Cell — explode the assumption that genetic information is “de-identified” in databases. “It’s really not the case. At least technically, it seems feasible to identify some significant part of the population” with such investigations, said Columbia’s Yaniv Erlich, chief science officer at MyHeritage and lead author of the Science paper. STAT's Rebecca Robbins has more here.
