Medicaid expansion associated with improving the health of vulnerable groups

Medicaid expansion could help improve the health of vulnerable populations, according to a new study. The study surveyed more than 3,000 individuals who had insurance through Michigan's Medicaid expansion plan, which was passed into law in 2014. Participants were surveyed in 2016 and again in 2017, and the researchers found that the percentage of those reporting poor health decreased over that time. The biggest decreases were among those who were Black, from the Detroit metropolitan area, and those who had a low income. Black people and those with two or more chronic conditions also reported fewer days spent in poor health in the month prior to being surveyed in 2017 than in 2016.
