Yesterday, Inovio Pharmaceuticals said its Phase 1 trial of a potential vaccine for the novel coronavirus was “positive.” But the accompanying press release provided little in the way of supporting evidence, leaving experts puzzled as to whether the vaccine has actual promise.
According to Inovio, 34 of 36 volunteers in the study had “immunological response rates” after vaccination. But the definition of that phrase is more than a little fuzzy, and the company didn’t say how many patients produced antibodies that neutralize the coronavirus — data key to determining whether the vaccine could protect against infection.
The company’s share price, which has increased nearly tenfold in 2020, fell about 15% on the news.
