USPSTF Methods and Social Determinants of Health

Today, Annals of Internal Medicine published a paper on the methods the Task Force uses to incorporate social determinants of health into its evidence-based recommendations. The paper, entitled “Developing Primary Care–Based Recommendations for Social Determinants of Health: Methods of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force,” is authored by current and former members of the Task Force and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Key focus areas of the paper include:
  • The social determinants of health that are currently incorporated in Task Force recommendations on preventive care.
  • A proposed approach to incorporate other social determinants in future Task Force recommendations.
Addressing social determinants of health is critical to achieving the Task Force’s mission of improving the health of all Americans. By reviewing evidence and incorporating social determinants of health into the Task Force’s recommendation methodology, the Task Force will continue to make preventive service recommendations that improve health and quality of life.
