The mystery of Patrick Soon-Shiong’s therapy for famous patients
A former senator and a beloved game show host, both diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer, say they benefited from an experimental treatment cocktail from physician and billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong. But because there are nine individual drugs in Soon-Shiong’s combination therapy, it’s unclear which are actually beneficial — and whether those anecdotes can be replicated in a clinical trial.
As STAT’s Rebecca Robbins and Adam Feuerstein report, independent physicians said the stories from Harry Reid and Alex Trebek are encouraging, but cautioned that without data generated in a controlled setting there’s no way to be sure the therapy is actually effective.
Even so, having high-profile patients has already become accretive for Soon-Shiong. NantKwest, a biotech he controls, has seen its stock price double since June, and its market value now tops $1.4 billion, up from just $45 million one year ago.
