What can Trump do to Fauci?

The White House’s recent jabs against Tony Fauci have reignited fears that the president could axe or otherwise undermine one of the nation’s top vaccine experts. As my colleague, Lev Facher, writes in a new story for STAT, Trump can’t easily fire Fauci, but he can still vastly diminish Fauci’s role in responding to the coronavirus pandemic. Trump could, for example, reassign Fauci to a lesser role in the federal government, or drastically curtain Fauci’s public appearances, like he did for CDC expert Nancy Messonnier.
