Inside STAT: Memorial Sloan Kettering patient and volunteer says cancer center 'betrayed my trust'

Over the the course of three decades, writer Steven Petrow, his sister, and his mother have all been treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. "In many ways, Memorial Sloan Kettering has been like family," Petrow, who has volunteered for the center, writes in a new First Opinion for STAT. But recent reporting by the New York Times and ProPublica — first on the chief medical officer's failure to disclose financial conflicts, and then on a deal that gave an AI startup access to a vast archive of slides of patient tissues — left Petrow feeling betrayed. "I worry about ethical boundaries being crossed with these tangled commercial relationships," he writes.
