Prices may soon be required in drug ads
A drug’s list price will have to be disclosed in its advertisements, under an emerging plan from the Trump administration. The administration deputized an FDA working group to study the matter back in the spring and, as Politico reported Friday, HHS might spell out the details as soon as Monday.
The "list price" is the price set by the drug company, and often it's not actually the amount of money a patient ends up paying because of a range of factors, including discounts and insurance. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb told STAT back in May that experts were trying to determine the best way to require drug companies to be more transparent about their pricing.
Watch out for details in a speech at 4 p.m. today by HHS Secretary Alex Azar, in which he is expected to discuss the administration's efforts to bring down drug prices.
