Announcing this year's STAT Madness winners

And now for a fun note to round out this edition of the newsletter: We have the winners of this year's STAT Madness contest, our bracket-style competition to identify the best in published biomedical research from last year. Here are our two winners for this year:
  • People's choice: With 70% of the final votes, scientists at MIT's Koch Institute cinched this year's win, for work on fluorescent carbon nanotubules that allow scientists to detect minuscule ovarian cancer tumors way before surgeons can see them.
  • Editors' pickOur choice this year was work by health policy scientists Ziad Obermeyer and Sendhil Mullainathan, who uncovered how a commonly used algorithm in hospitals could inadvertently be heightening racial bias that exists in health care.
