A Chinese virologist compares pandemic response in China and the U.S.
Shao Yiming, a Chinese virologist and the chief expert on AIDS at China’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention, recently shared his “independent observations on the Chinese and global control efforts” in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Shao had spent time with the World Health Organization on the global AIDS program in 1989, a stint that led him to help set up a network that tracks the genetic variation of HIV.
Speaking to Science in a recent interview, he drew comparisons between Covid-19 and the AIDS epidemic, how nations are responding to the current outbreak, and cultural differences that could be fueling the tensions between China and the U.S.
