Older individuals may have higher risk of complications after a colonoscopy

Those over the age of 75 may be at a higher risk for complications following a colonoscopy, according to new research. Scientists looked at data from more than 38,000 patients in Ontario, Canada, and found that although the overall rate of complications such as bleeding in the month following a colonoscopy was low, the prevalence was twice as high — almost 7% — among those 75 and older. Certain conditions, including anemia, arrhythmia, a history of smoking, and obesity, were also associated with a higher risk of complications. At the same time, patients who had previously had colonoscopies were less likely to develop complications. The findings only represent an association, but indicate the need to take into account preexisting conditions in older individuals when considering a colonoscopy.
