Health care workers say protesting racial injustice should be part of the job

Inside STAT: Health workers increasingly see activism as part of the job

As the pandemic and protests against police brutality shed new light on the ways in which systemic racism affects health, health workers are increasingly treating activism as part of their jobs. They're writing op-eds, organizing sit-ins, and circulating petitions, all in an effort to advocate on behalf of their patients and the societal problems that affect their health. “If we, as physicians, are really truly in this profession to heal and to help our communities be healthy, we need to be engaging beyond the doors of the clinical and the doors of the hospital,” Nathan Chomilo, founding member of Minnesota Doctors for Health Equity, tells STAT contributor Ruth Hailu.
