On Monday the FDA revoked its controversial emergency use authorization for hydroxychloroquine, the unproven malaria drug touted as a cure for Covid-19. On paper, the decision will prevent the national stockpile from distributing the drug directly to hospitalized patients. But its impacts are likely much larger: Hydroxychloroquine mania led states to create their own stockpiles, inspired politicians to campaign on the issue, and pitted patients eager to try the drug against doctors skeptical of the evidence.
