AHRQ is pleased to announce that the AHRQ QI v2020 software will be released on 31 July, 2020. A Webinar presentation is scheduled for Aug 5, 2020 from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm ET.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is pleased to announce that the AHRQ QI v2020 software will be released on 31 July, 2020Both the SAS QI and WinQI v2020 software will be available for download from the AHRQ QI website at: http://www.qualityindicators.ahrq.gov/Software/Default.aspx.
The v2020 software will calculate risk-adjusted rates based on one full year of ICD-10-CM/PCS coded all-payer 2017 data
HIGHLIGHTS:
Risk adjustment:
  • Hospital level indicators in the Pediatric Quality Indicators (PDI) module are now risk-adjusted in the SAS QI and WinQI v2020 software.
  • In the IQI module of AHRQ SAS QI v2020, the All Patient Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (APR-DRGs) in the risk-adjustment models are based on the patient’s admission diagnoses and use present on admission (POA) information.
  • In the PDI module of the AHRQ SAS QI v2020, the Clinical Classifications Software Refined (CCSR) in the risk-adjustment models are based on the patient’s discharge admission diagnoses and use present on admission (POA) information.
  • v2020 QI software will not include COVID-19 codes in either the QI technical specifications or in the risk adjustment. Documentation providing guidance on how users might adapt their input data files to account for COVID-19 will be available on the AHRQ QI website with the v2020 software release.
Population File: The updated QI population file uses intercensal and postcensal estimates of county-level population by single-year age group, sex, race, and Hispanic origin covering the years 2000 through 2019 from the US Census Bureau. The population file uses Census estimates for single year age population to create AHRQ age bands. Once the document is available with the v2020 software release, you can review the details around the population methodology at: http://www.qualityindicators.ahrq.gov/Downloads/Software/SAS/V2020/AHRQ_QI_v2020 _ICD10_Population_File.pdf.
Rates: The SAS QI and WinQI v2020  software produces both observed and risk-adjusted rates.
Retired Indicators: No indicators were retired in v2020.
Exclusions: All PSI and PDI exclusions are now denominator exclusions. The small number of numerator-based exclusions in previous versions of the software are now denominator exclusions.
Calibration: The users now have two options to calibrate smoothed rates and composite values using observed to expected ratio.
Software Updates:

About the AHRQ Quality Indicators
The AHRQ QIs include four sets of measures—Patient Safety Indicators, Inpatient Quality Indicators, Prevention Quality Indicators, and Pediatric Quality Indicators—which address quality of care for patients hospitalized for a broad range of procedures or conditions that are high risk, problem prone, and/or high volume. The AHRQ QIs represent a national standard and are publicly available at no cost to the users. QIs can be used to support quality improvement efforts, public reporting, and accountability programs, and ultimately to help provide safe, effective care to patients. Many of the AHRQ QIs are used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other payers for quality monitoring, pay-for-performance, and value-based purchasing initiatives. Hospitals and health systems can use AHRQ QIs as part of an overall performance initiative to improve the quality of care. For more information about the AHRQ QIs visit http://www.qualityindicators.ahrq.gov/.
