This WebM&M case identifies a common clinical condition – endometriosis, which impacts up to 10% of women – with a similarly common delay in diagnosis. A mixture of shortcomings in the fundamental understanding of the disease, diagnostic biases, and the failure to validate a young woman’s complaints resulted in a 12-year diagnostic delay and significant physical and psychologic morbidity.
