Characteristics of heavy drinkers in the U.S.
Two thirds of U.S. adults reported consuming alcohol in 2018, and 5% overall reported heavy drinking, which is defined as more than 7 drinks weekly for women, and more than 14 drinks for men. Here's more from a new CDC report:
- Overall consumption: Around 46% of those who reported drinking alcohol in 2018 were light drinkers, consuming three or fewer weekly drinks, on average. More than 15% were moderate drinkers, consuming between four and 14 weekly drinks.
- Demographics of heavy drinkers: Men and women were equally likely to be heavy drinkers, while people ages 45-64 were likeliest to drink the most. White adults were between two and three times more likely to drink heavily compared to those of other racial groups.
- Mental health of heavy drinkers: A higher percentage of those who said they regularly felt depressed, anxious, or worried were heavy drinkers compared to their peers who didn't report those issues.
