Despite their promise, stem cell treatments have also been plagued by sketchy practices among unregulated clinics touting unapproved therapies. Those clinics have offered cures for everything from Alzheimer's disease to cerebral palsy, often without evidence and have sometimes led to harm. But how do patients looking for treatment for their ailments wade through the sea of options to gauge which options are legitimate? A few players, including reputable institutions like Mayo Clinic, are trying to correct the record on faulty science to better guide patients. But experts still warn that misinformation is easier to come by than accurate research. STAT's Natalya Ortolano has more here.
