A new battle in CRISPR patent war

A government patent board on Friday dismissed the University of California’s claims that its scientists first used CRISPR as a genome editor in 2012. The Patent Trial and Appeal Board concluded, instead, that the Broad Institute was the first to patent the ability to edit eukaryotic genomes with CRISPR-Cas9.
There’s still a chance for University of California to turn around this judgment — but it’d be an uphill battle, STAT’s Andrew Joseph writes. The path forward, though, will involve deep dives into the intricacies of microbiology in patent law.

That said, it's no wonder both parties are still fighting. Hanging in the balance: billions of dollars and maybe a Nobel Prize.
