Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services

Program Year 2021 Teaching Hospital List

The updated Open Payments Program Year 2021 Teaching Hospital List (in PDF and XLSX) is now available on Open Payments Resources page. The teaching hospital list identifies which teaching hospitals are considered covered recipients and are reportable in Program Year 2021.
Note that this list should only be used for Program Year 2021, data collected from January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021.
Teaching hospital lists for previous years are also available on the Open Payments Resources Page.

Key (de minimis) Thresholds for Program Year 2021 Reporting

The Open Payments key (de minimis) thresholds for reporting have been adjusted based on the Consumer Price Index.
Small payments or other transfers of value of less than $11.04 do not need to be reported, except when the total annual value of payments or other transfers of value to a covered recipient exceeds $110.04 for Program Year 2021.
Note that these amounts only apply to Program Year 2021, data collected from January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2021.
You can access the Key (de minimis) Threshold for 2021 as well as prior program years’ thresholds on the Applicable Manufacturer and GPO Data Collection page.

Physician and Non-Physician Practitioner Taxonomy Lists

Open Payments is releasing the list of reportable taxonomies for the new categories of providers added to the Open Payments’ definition of a covered recipient starting with 2021 data collection: Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists & Anesthesiologist Assistants, and Certified Nurse Midwives.
This Non-Physician Practitioner Taxonomy List contains all of the accepted non-physician practitioner taxonomy codes that can be input into the Covered Recipient Specialty field when submitting data in the Open Payments system.
In addition to this list, Open Payments is also making available a combined Physician and Non-Physician Practitioner Taxonomy List. This resource contains the full set of taxonomies for Open Payments reporting of PY 2021 data including both physicians and non-physician practitioners.
Both lists can be found on the Open Payments Resources Page.
Please note that the above lists only define the range of accepted values in the Covered Recipient Specialty field in the Open Payments system, they do not define the universe of providers considered covered recipients in Open Payments. Reporting entities must follow the covered recipient definitions provided in the program’s final rule and clarifications in the FAQs when deciding whether an individual provider is reportable. When reporting on a covered recipient whose specialty recorded in other CMS’s systems of record does not match any of the specialties on the list, the reporting entity should select an alternative taxonomy code from the list that most closely represents the specialty the provider practices with as it’s known to the reporting entity.
