About the Speakers
Ryan Beams, Ph.D.

Dr. Ryan Beams received his Ph.D. in Optics from the University of Rochester, Rochester, NY advised by Professor Lukas Novotny in 2013. He is currently a Physicist and leading the research program in Medical Extended Reality within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Office of Science and Engineering laboratories. His research emphasizes optical characterization and the development of evaluation methods for augmented and virtual reality devices used in medicine.
About the Presentation
This lecture will provide an overview of augmented and virtual reality technology and of the landscape of potential medical applications. The second part of the lecture will focus on regulatory science efforts to address evaluation challenges for using augmented and virtual reality in medicine.
