FDA Outbreak Investigation - Update on Multistate Outbreak of Salmonella Infections Linked to Products Reported to Contain Kratom

June 22, 2018 Update:
The FDA is reporting additional kratom-containing products that were found to be contaminated with Salmonella. Brands or companies associated with the newly reported products include: Gaia Ethnobotanical, KraveKratom, Spa & Organic Essentials of PA, LLC, Badger Botanicals LLC, Pious Lion, Earth Kratom, Blissful Remedies, CV Indo Perkasa.
The contaminated kratom products do not appear to share a common source, and the isolated Salmonella are of multiple serotypes, meaning they are not genetically related. This suggests that contamination is not limited to a single source, but may be found among many different kratom sources or suppliers.
Additional voluntary recalls have been issued from the following firms for certain kratom-containing products: Revibe LLC, Maya Distribution, LLC, Eden’s Ethnos, LLC, Badger Botanicals LLC, Pious Lion, and Gaia Ethnobotanical.
FDA’s outbreak investigational activities have closed, but FDA continues to address the issue of Salmonella in kratom. The FDA reminds consumers that raw products contaminated with Salmonella can make people sick if they consume them, and can also cross-contaminate surrounding surfaces and possibly expose others to Salmonella.
