June is National Safety Month! CDC’s Division of Laboratory Systems encourages clinical and public health laboratory professionals to observe National Safety Month by completing any of the safety-related training courses we offer for free online.

In the Latest Scholastic News... In observance of National Safety Month, DLS division director Ren M. Salerno, PhD was interviewed by Scholastic's Kids Press Corp reporter Victoria Feng to talk about the expertise, career paths, and value of laboratory professionals. As a result, check out our League of Laboratory Superheroes featured in “The CDC Spotlights Lab Workers.” DLS is doing its part to recruit the next generation of laboratory heroes.
Fundamentals of Centrifuge Safety Training Course This course provides general information intended to help laboratory professionals recognize and control hazards and risks associated with centrifuge use. Biothreat Preparedness Training for Sentinel Laboratories Complete a curriculum of interactive courses, each one a component of the Laboratory Response Network protocols for bioterrorism agent identification. BT Rule Out or Refer: Virtual Knowledge Exercise This virtual exercise provides an opportunity for the microbiologist to participate in a series of three virtual case studies using ASM’s sentinel laboratory protocols in a safe environment to detect potential bio threat agents. Packing and Shipping Division 6.2 Materials: What the Laboratory Professional Should Know If you participate in any phase of shipping laboratory specimens within the United States, learn about packaging and shipping infectious materials (Division 6.2 Materials) as specified in the Department of Transportation regulations. DLS Promotional Activities Earlier this month, CDC’s Division of Laboratory Systems spread out across the country to promote resources and opportunities for laboratory professionals. The first stop was Pasadena, CA, for the Association of Public Health Laboratories’ Annual Meeting. This four-day conference of more than 750 professionals addresses public health laboratory issues, trends, and technologies. The second stop was Atlanta, GA, for the American Society for Microbiology’s ASM Microbe 2018. This annual conference connects scientists with experts in their field, and showcases advances in microbial sciences from around the globe.
