This 17-page document assesses the potential risk of outbreaks/transmission of communicable diseases during the 2018 Hajj. Due to the vaccination requirements for traveling to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and the preparedness plans put in place by the host country addressing the management of health hazards during and after the Hajj, the overall risk for European Union/European Economic Area citizens of becoming infected with a contagious disease during the 2018 Hajj in Saudi Arabia is considered to be low.

In this 40-page report, the Transportation Research Board explores how airports include persons with disabilities and others with access or functional needs into emergency exercises. Because not all functional needs are visually or readily apparent, airports find that including these community members in emergency exercises improves the safety of passengers, airport visitors, and employees at airports. The report describes effective practices and provides additional resources and tools.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)’s Microbiology Coordination Section developed this 19-page multi-disease strategy for cost-efficient design and management of ECDC external quality assessments (EQAs), which strengthen laboratories established for public health disease surveillance and threat detection. It outlines priority areas to be considered to help improve and maintain high quality and comparability of key laboratory surveillance data reported at the European level, and foster capabilities to detect emerging and epidemic diseases or drug resistance threats across European Union Member States.

This 12-page issue brief presents findings from a 2018 survey of community health centers on health center activities related to the prevention and treatment of opioid use disorder. Survey responses indicated that health centers have expanded treatment services in response to the escalating crisis, yet treatment capacity challenges remain. Health centers in Medicaid expansion states seem to be more equipped to respond to the epidemic in their states than are those in non-expansion states.
