As part of its effort to strengthen HIV/AIDS research training in low- and middle-income countries, Fogarty recently awarded more than $700,000 to fund mentoring activities as a part of Fogarty-funded HIV/AIDS training programs in Ethiopia, Haiti, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. These Clayton-Dedonder Global Health Mentorship Fellows Program awards will be used to enhance the overall culture and practice of mentoring at the institutions. Award recipients will also develop and implement a course on mentoring and leadership for identified fellows.
Funding for the program is provided by the NIH portion of funds from the World AIDS Foundation through theFoundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) . The fellowships are named in honor of Drs. Alastair Clayton and Raymond Dedonder, the main scientific staff for the World AIDS Foundation for most of its 15-year history.
The World AIDS Foundation, jointly administered by Fogarty and the Institut Pasteur , was established as a part of the agreements by the Presidents of the United States and France on disbursement of royalties from HIV test kits following discovery of the HIV virus, and development of the technologies to test for HIV.
