Making surgical wards safer for patients with diabetes: reducing hypoglycaemia and insulin errors.

    Diabetes care involves the use medications that have high risk of adverse drug events. This commentary describes a multidisciplinary plan–do–study–act initiative to develop insulin errorreduction strategies and improve safety of surgical patients with diabetes. The 3-year project developed guidelines, educational initiatives, and a whiteboard system to enhance the reliability of insulin therapy in the unit.
