Investigating US medical students' motivation to respond to lapses in professionalism.

    Research has shown that unprofessional and disruptive behavior can compromise a culture of safety. However, less is known about how medical students respond to lapses in professionalism. Using a qualitative approach, researchers found that students did report observing unprofessional behavior among faculty and their peers. Students were less driven to respond to it if they feared retribution and more likely to respond if they felt others would benefit from doing so.
