Superbug sickens 39 babies in Romanian hospital

Dozens of babies in a Romanian maternity hospital have been infected with a drug-resistant superbug. The AP reports that 39 babies have been diagnosed with antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections at Giulesti Maternity hospital in Bucharest, which closed Nov. 30 amid the outbreak. Staphylococcus bacteria are often found on the skin and the mouth and don't cause any issues, but the bugs can become life-threatening if they enter the bloodstream. Public health officials have said some hospital employees were found to be carriers of the bacteria. The babies are being cared for in other facilities as health officials decide whether to keep the hospital closed.
