AHRQ Researcher Urges Paradigm Shift to Informed Choice

On April 4th Health Affairs published the blog, Making Informed Consent an Informed Choice by AHRQ researcher Cindy Brach. Brach urges clinicians and health systems to shift to an informed choice paradigm that requires:
  • Easy-to-understand information about the benefits, risk, and harms of all options;
  • Eliciting patients’ and families’ goals and values; and
  • Impartial help with making the decision.
Brach makes the case that addressing health literacy is a prerequisite for informed choice, and points to resources such as AHRQ's Making Informed Consent an Informed Choice: Training for Health Care Leaders and Professionals
