More Effort Is Needed To Ensure Patients Understand Doctors' Instructions

National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report Data Spotlight: Health Literacy and the “Teach-Back” Method



The percentage of adults always asked to “teach back” their healthcare provider’s instructions in their own words rose from 24 percent in 2011 to 30 percent in 2015. Blacks, Hispanics and people with less than a high school education were more likely to always be asked to teach back instructions. Check out an AHRQ Data Spotlight for more information about the evidence-based teach-back method.
