Inside STAT: A massive — and free — new data set aims to help AI work better for biotech

Artificial intelligence in health care is all the rage right now. What data are currently available aren’t always ideal for machine learning, however, and could even jeopardize the quality of some algorithms. But a new, free solution from Recursion Pharmaceuticals may help fix the problem of a lack of high quality data. The company today released more than 125,000 images of four different cell types collected through a microscope — of the cells exposed to a certain type of RNA-based drug. “I don’t think it’s fair to say that the release of this one data set will end up impacting hundreds of millions or billions of people — but hopefully we’re able to take a step in the right direction,” Recursion’s co-founder and CEO Chris Gibson told STAT’s Kate Sheridan.
