More women listed as authors in medical journal articles
More women are listed as authors on medical journal articles than before, according to a new study. Analyzing nearly 275,000 articles, researchers found that between 2008 and 2018, the overall proportion of women authors increased by more than 4%, with a near 8% increase in women as last authors. The study also found that articles with women as last authors were 13% more likely to also include women as first authors. But disparities still exist when it comes to women being listed as the last author, which usually indicates the most prominence: Fewer than 10% of the women identified as first authors in 2008 became senior authors by 2018, but it only took men five years to reach that 10% threshold.
