Alzheimer’s disease, the most common type of dementia, affects an estimated 5.8 million Americans, is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and is a leading cause of disability and poor health for older adults . This webinar presents information on ongoing work and achieved outcomes for two states participating in the Financial Alignment Initiative. State agencies, health plans, and community organizations in California and Texas collaborate within the framework of these demonstrations to improve care while controlling costs for enrollees with dementia, which account for an estimated 25 percent of their participating beneficiaries. Presenters will share strategies and tools for the delivery of dementia capable care, as well as tips for leveraging resources within federal, state and local environments to build more responsive systems of care delivery.

Intended audience: This webinar is intended for a wide range of stakeholders – includes health plan leaders, primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, caregivers, and organizations that provide services for dually eligible beneficiaries including managed long-term services and supports programs and consumer organizations.

Reducing Administrative Burden to Put Patients over Paperwork Request for Information

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a Request for Information (RFI) seeking new ideas from the public on how to continue the progress of the Patients over Paperwork initiative. The RFI on Reducing Administrative Burden to Put Patients over Paperwork invites patients and their families, the medical community, and other healthcare stakeholders to recommend further changes to rules, policies, and procedures that would shift more of clinicians’ time and our healthcare system’s resources from needless paperwork to high-quality care that improves patient health.

Among other topics in this RFI, CMS solicits new ideas in several areas related to better care for dually eligible individuals, including:
  • Aligning Medicare, Medicaid and other payer coding, payment and documentation requirements and processes;
  • Clarifying or simplifying regulations or operations that pose challenges for beneficiaries dually enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid and those who care for such beneficiaries; and
  • Simplifying beneficiary enrollment and eligibility determination across programs.

The RFI on Reducing Administrative Burden to Put Patients over Paperwork is posted in the Federal Register at: https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2019/06/11/2019-12215/request-for-information-reducing-administrative-burden-to-put-patients-over-paperwork.

The comment period closes on August 12, 2019.

Tip Sheet: Alignment of Medicare Savings Program Eligibility with the Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy Program

To help states understand one option to streamline and improve Medicare Savings Program (MSP) eligibility determination processes for eligible beneficiaries, the Integrated Care Resource Center developed a tip sheet, Modernizing Medicare Savings Programs to Better Serve Dually Eligible Beneficiaries: Alignment of MSP Eligibility with the Medicare Part D Low Income Subsidy Program. The tip sheet describes ways states can align MSP eligibility criteria with those used for the Medicare Part D Low-Income Subsidy (LIS) program to facilitate the use of LIS eligibility data in determining eligibility for MSPs. The tip sheet is available at: https://www.integratedcareresourcecenter.com/resource/alignment-medicare-savings-program-eligibility-medicare-part-d-low-income-subsidy-program.

New Evaluation Reports for Demonstrations under the Financial Alignment Initiative
