It recommends that screenings be conducted after children’s basic needs have been met, an implementation team is convened, and resources for children experiencing distress have been identified. This report, part of the Research Counts: Children and Disasters Special Collection, discusses research that found that having a parent who screened positive for a psychiatric disorder after a disaster was one of the biggest factors in predicting a child’s post-disaster symptoms or a decline in school performance—even more significant than whether the child was exposed directly to the disaster. This report details how the Morovis Community Health Center was the only healthcare facility that stayed open in its service area during and after the storm, and how multidisciplinary teams deployed into the service area to provide home visits to diabetes patients who could not come to the health center.
