The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 directed the creation of a Network of Patient Safety Databases (NPSD) that would be able to aggregate and analyze non-identifiable patient safety information voluntarily reported by Patient Safety Organizations and the providers that work with them. The goal is to be able to analyze national and regional statistics related to patient safety and quality across the United States. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is responsible for facilitating and maintaining the NPSD.
Today, as the NPSD is now operational, we celebrate the beginning of an exciting new phase in the implementation of this landmark legislation. There is much to be learned from this early national portrait of patient safety reports.
The NPSD data and more information about the NPSD can be accessed at the new NPSD website at https://www.ahrq.gov/NPSD.
