More evidence links gun ownership to domestic deaths
A new study adds to the growing body of evidence that links gun ownership to the prevalence of deaths from guns. In the latest study, researchers found that for every 10% increase in gun ownership, there was also a 13% increase in domestic homicides — the death of an intimate partner or other family member — using a firearm. Researchers looked at differences among states and found that those states with increased gun ownership — including many states in the South and the West — had higher rates of domestic firearm homicide compared to states with lower rates of gun ownership, such as those in the Northeast. The findings don’t establish a causal link, but point to future directions for research and policy to better understand the relationship between the presence of guns and domestic violence.
