More evidence links gun ownership to domestic deaths

new study adds to the growing body of evidence that links gun ownership to the prevalence of deaths from guns. In the latest study, researchers found that for every 10% increase in gun ownership, there was also a 13% increase in domestic homicides — the death of an intimate partner or other family member — using a firearm. Researchers looked at differences among states and found that those states with increased gun ownership — including many states in the South and the West — had higher rates of domestic firearm homicide compared to states with lower rates of gun ownership, such as those in the Northeast. The findings don’t establish a causal link, but point to future directions for research and policy to better understand the relationship between the presence of guns and domestic violence.
