Death rates in states with most deaths are 50% higher than states with fewest deaths
There's a wide gap between states with the highest and lowest death rates, according to a new CDC report. Here’s more:
- Top five states: Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia were the five states with the highest age-adjusted death rates, at an average of nearly 927 deaths per 100,000 people.
- Bottom five states: In contrast, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Minnesota, and New York had the lowest death rate, at 624 deaths per 100,000 people.
- Other trends: Men died at higher rates than women in the top five states, as did white and black people. The rate among Hispanic people was lower in the top five states than in the bottom five states.
