CDC Viral Hepatitis Updates

Viral Hepatitis National Progress Report
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an online report that measures the nation’s progress in preventing and controlling viral hepatitis. This year’s National Viral Hepatitis Progress Report highlights the importance of:
  • Vaccinating vulnerable populations against hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
  • Detecting and stopping ongoing transmission of hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C.
  • Improving testing and linkage to care and treatment for persons with chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Hepatitis A Outbreak
CDC has been assisting state and local health departments with hepatitis A outbreaks, spread through person-to-person contact.  Since the outbreaks were first identified in 2016, 30 states have publicly reported the following as of September 13, 2019:
  • Cases: 25,783
  • Hospitalizations: 15,517 (60%)
  • Deaths: 259

Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Vaccination Resources for Gay and Bisexual Men
CDC recommends gay and bisexual men get vaccinated against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B. Unfortunately, adult vaccination rates are still low, and many men remain unprotected. To try to help improve hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccination rates and protect gay and bisexual men from infection, new materials and resources encouraging vaccination were developed. These resources include a new website and educational materials that can be customized with local contact information and digital tools that can be used for websites, dating application advertisements, and social media.
