European doctor providing abortion medication in U.S. sues FDA

A European doctor who provides abortion pills to U.S. women is suing the FDA to continue to be able to prescribe the medications, NPR reports. In a lawsuit filed in Idaho yesterday, Amsterdam-based Dr. Rebecca Gomperts is alleging that, since March, U.S. officials have seized between three and 10 doses of abortion drugs she has prescribed through Aid Access, an organization that she set up in 2018 to help women obtain abortions. Gomperts also claims that the U.S. government is blocking Aid Access from receiving some patients’ payments. As many states in the U.S. enact stricter abortion laws, some 7,000 women have received prescriptions through Aid Access to the abortion medications mifepristone and misoprostol. The FDA declined to comment to NPR on any enforcement actions it may take against Gomperts or Aid Access.
