How AARP became Washington’s biggest bulwark against pharma

You’d think it was some dark money group tied to some tycoon tucked away in a glitzy mansion in Malibu or Aspen, right? Well, surprise, surprise: It’s AARP.
The group has been spending a huge chunk of its $1.7 billion revenues to take on the pharmaceutical industry. The campaign has already ignited a war between AARP and PhRMA, which is now running its own campaign questioning whether AARP really has it’s members' interests at heart. Who will prevail is still unknown, but early signs show AARP’s advocacy is paying off: The group has helped support 36 new state laws around the country that would lower prescription drug prices.
For more details on how AARP became such a thorn in PhRMA’s side, check out my new story for STAT. It’s chock full of fun details that include everything from seniors dressed as pill bottles to a baseball bat emblazoned with a message that’ll make your kneecaps tremble. Read more.
